Educational Assistance Program Student Feedback (2009–2010)

Every year we receive letters from the family members of fallen police officers, firefighters and paramedics who have received educational assistance from the 100 Club of Chicago. While their life stories and educational experiences are unique, their message to us is always the same: “Thank you 100 Club of Chicago and members for your continued support and for helping make my education possible.”

We thought we’d share some of their feedback with you, including the highlights that follow. Here are a few of the highlights of all the student feedback we received during the past year:

From Southern Illinois University

The student is in his second year in the Aviation program at Southern Illinois University and thinking about joining a fraternity. He admits it is difficult for him to log flight hours due to lack of transportation to the airport and hefty training fees, but all in all his first year went extremely well.

University of Southern California

In her third year at the University of Southern California, she is studying architecture. She enjoys the idea of becoming an architectural critic or a writer of children’s architecture books, so she has decided to pursue her minor in English.

Kishwaukee Community College

She has been taking classes at Kishwaukee Community College where she plans to receive her A.A.S. degree in December, and intends to transfer to Robert Morris University in February 2010 to begin her studies towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Office Administration.

University of Illinois at Chicago

She has embarked on her second year of graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Jane Addams College of Social Work. She is proud to report that she successfully completed her first year of graduate school with a 4.0 GPA. She also reports that her internship for this school year is through the Little City Foundation in their adoption unit.

Northeastern Illinois University

He started his pre-pharmacy degree at Northeastern Illinois University. He said it is harder than he thought it would be, but is determined to keep pushing to earn his degree.

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

She is currently in her last year of a Master’s Program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. She is in an internship program at the Lydia Home Association where she is working as a Counselor with clients from the community as well as with children and families in the foster care system.

College of DuPage

This student is pleased to report that he obtained Academic Honors at the College of DuPage with a 3.5 GPA. He has decided to further pursue his education and is currently enrolled at DePaul University.

University of Illinois at Chicago

She is now in her senior year at the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her family is incredibly proud that she finished her spring 2009 semester with a 4.0 GPA and was placed on the Dean’s list. She plans to become a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools system.

University of Texas at Austin

This student recently relocated to Austin, Texas from Chicago where she is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Drama and Theatre for Youth from the University of Texas at Austin. She spent five months in India where she served as a teacher of English, Social Studies and Drama at an elementary school for children of all socio-economic levels.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

He completed a summer internship at CBS Radio’s “The Score,” and is back at school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Hampton University

His first year at Hampton University proved to be full of achievements. He received the Man of Excellence Award, was Co-Chair of the Senate Events Committee within the Student Government Association, and was inducted into both the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity and the Honors College Program. In addition, he served as President of the Honors’ Learning Community, Parliamentarian of the Freshman Class, and managed to achieve a 3.57 grade point average. He sees Harvard Law School in his future.

Ball State University

She is a sophomore at Ball State University and has her sights set on a career as a Dental Hygienist.

University of Illinois at Chicago

He is happy to report that he is now attending the University of Illinois at Chicago where he is majoring in Economics. He completed his educational requirements at Daley and Truman Colleges.

College of Lake County

She began her junior year at the College of Lake County and was accepted into their Pre-Pharmacy program. She is planning on graduate school at either Chicago State University or at the University of Illinois at Chicago to pursue a Pharmacy degree.

Governors State University

This student is currently enrolled at Governors State University and will also be taking a few classes at Moraine Valley College. Upon completion of his Bachelor’s degree at Governors State, he plans to apply for a Ph.D. program. He reported that he had the best semester of school since high school.

University of Notre Dame

He’s currently in graduate school at the University of Notre Dame and appreciates the 100 Club’s generosity and wants everyone to know that this financial assistance will go a long way to ensure the rest of his education.

Governors State University

She is completing her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Governors State University, with minors in Communications and Business. She is currently employed in Information Technology and Services within the Cook County Bureau of Health Services at Oak Forest Hospital. She plans to continue her education and pursue a Master’s degree.
